Binnen is veilig, buiten is vrijheid. Géraldine Jeanjean richt zich in haar werk voor de SPA2020 op de fysieke en symbolische functie van glas waar het gaat om de scheiding tussen binnen en buiten. Haar interesse gaat uit naar de vreemde en in zichzelf tegenstrijdige functie van glas: de bescherming die een kwetsbaar materiaal ons biedt. Glas scheidt het binnen van het buiten maar we behouden toch, door zijn transparantie, het contact met buiten. Deze perceptie van de wereld is geruststellend, maar het contact is alleen visueel. Pas buiten worden al onze zintuigen aangesproken.
Onze evolutie heeft deze beschutting gebracht. De ontwikkelingen de afgelopen periode hebben ons geconfronteerd met de behoefte deel te kunnen blijven uitmaken van die buitenwereld.
In termen van vrijheid is glas een compromis. Dat compromis wordt gesymboliseerd door de vogelwerende raamsticker, die moet voorkomen dat vogels deze transparante barrière niet opmerken. Zij herinnert ons eraan dat onze vrije blik op de natuur vanuit onze shelter in de cultuur slechts schijn is.

Inside is safety, outside is freedom. Géraldine Jeanjean’s work for Somfy Photography Award 2020 focuses on the physical and symbolic function of glass as a separation between inside and out. She is interested in the odd and inherently contradictory function of glass: an extremely fragile material that nevertheless protects us. Glass separates the interior from the exterior, but its transparency enables us to retain our contact with the outside world. This contact is reassuring, but purely visual. It is only outside that we can exercise all our senses.
Evolution has brought us this protection. Recent events have confronted us with our urgent need to continue participating in the world outside.
In terms of freedom, glass is a compromise. That compromise is symbolised by those window stickers designed to prevent birds from colliding with the invisible barrier of transparent glass. They remind us that our apparently free view of the natural world from the shelter of human culture is a mere illusion.
